Tokio Marine HCC – Casualty Group, a member of Tokio Marine HCC group of companies has an exciting opportunity for a Chief Legal Officer in our office located in Chicago, IL.

Position Summary:

Guides legal strategy and advises on legal matters for Casualty Group including product development, underwriting strategy, and compliance. The position requires extensive knowledge and experience to skillfully manage a complex and highly regulated legal environment where knowledge of insurance law and company products are essential to success.

Key Responsibilities: 

Relying on a broad business background combined with extensive skills and expert knowledge, the Chief Legal Officer – Casualty Group is accountable for the following responsibilities:


  • Provide legal advice on underwriting, coverage, product development, and litigation on Casualty Group insurance products, including Primary Casualty, Excess Casualty and Artisan Contractors.
  • Responsible for creating, maintaining and improving all Casualty Group forms and endorsements. Assist underwriters in the creation and drafting of manuscript endorsement and maintain and control entire Casualty Group form set.
  • Coordinate with Corporate Claims and and outsourced claims providers to assist in document production and written discovery, prepare witnesses for deposition and trial testimony.
  • Perform Contract Reviews of NDAs, insured contracts, MGA contracts and service provider contracts.
  • Perform compliance research and regulatory analysis to monitor company performance and support business operations. Provide analysis and interpretation of regulatory insurance requirements including applicable state insurance department statutes, regulations, and bulletins to determine impact and adherence to filing and regulatory requirements.
  • Keep parent company informed of all compliance issues, policy filings, and assist in the coordination and facilitation of Market Conduct Examinations and Internal/External Audits.
  • Manage company complaint process including responses to the Departments of Insurance (DOI).
  • Provide review for Company Adverting/Marketing efforts, oversee screening for Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC), and coordinate the Claims Adjuster licensing process.
  • Develop, recommend, and implement policies and procedures to ensure compliance to emerging regulatory compliance issues.
  • Assist with preparation/filing of Admitted Form/Rate filings and maintain accuracy and completeness of all such Forms/Endorsements.
  • Assist Corporate Accounting/Reinsurance with reinsurance reporting including cash calls.
  • Assist with coordination of all coverage litigation against the company including managing legal holds.
  • Coordinate all company and individual insurance licenses, including individual state surplus tax filings.
  • Serve as Records Retention Coordinator for Casualty.
  • Provide oversight and assistance for Center of Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) reporting.
  • Update the company’s internal systems with current rates, rules, and forms.
  • Provide guidance to IT for updates to software systems (e.g., Infinity & AS400) relating to state and/or county tax/fee/assessment updates for both admitted and surplus lines products.
  • Participate in the development of company products and services.
  • Coordinate company compliance trainings for claims and underwriting personnel including annual required training.

Job Requirements

Position Knowledge, Skills, and Requirements: 


  • Doctorate of Jurisprudence from an American Bar Association accredited law school 


  • Minimum of 10 years or relevant and progressive experience in broad areas of expertise as a lawyer handling insurance related matters with expertise in casualty liability law and understanding of reinsurance, underwriting, and claim practices.
  • Extensive background in complex negotiations, litigation, arbitration and mediation.
  • Strong working knowledge of the legal, financial, and operational aspects of the US construction market.
  • A well-developed network and familiarity with specialty law firms who can provide the company the best possible defense at a local level.


  • Possess and have ability to apply advanced knowledge of principles, practices, and procedures
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills with an emphasis on confidentiality, tact, and diplomacy
  • Superior organizational and analytical skills; demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously
  • Knowledgeable of industry changes, legal updates, and technical developments related to the Casualty Group’s business to proactively respond to changing business environment
  • Advanced proficiency and experience using Microsoft Office package (Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Word)
  • Overtime hours may be required to fulfill job responsibilities
  • May require travel outside normal work location
