We have an exciting opportunity for an Internal Controls Manager in our Corporate Headquarters located in Houston, TX.

Position Summary:

Responsible for identifying, documenting, evaluating, and consulting on the design and implementation of internal controls, as well as assessing, evaluating and reporting the risk exposure of control failures.  These responsibilities are primarily performed in conjunction with TMHCC’s controls monitoring and testing programs.

Key Responsibilities: 

Relying on broad knowledge and strong leadership skills, the Internal Controls Manager is accountable for the following responsibilities: 

  • Assist Director in development and execution of comprehensive internal control processes to help Company ensure compliance with all aspects of program to comply with various Sarbanes-Oxley Act provisions, requirements for Statutory and MAR (NAIC’s Model Audit Rule), as well as to support TMHCC’s Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) program.
  • Review control documentation, evaluate control design, and review results of effectiveness testing.
  • Identify and analyze deficiencies in internal controls, recommend changes, develop remediation plans, and track and test remediation efforts.
  • Identify compensating controls, where required.
  • Consult with control owners as needed regarding control design and process improvement.
  • Work with external auditors to complete attestation procedures.
  • Collaborate with other corporate departments and subsidiary personnel as appropriate to fulfill compliance duties.
  • Ensure completeness and accuracy of work papers developed to document work performed.
  • Manage Internal Control Analysts and consultants, as required.
  • Prepare management reports, as required.
  • Facilitate scoping and coordinate testing for the various compliance drivers (e.g., SOx, MAR) as well as to support our external auditors’ financial statement audit. This includes management of internal and external resources as required and cross-department coordination and communication with Internal Audit and subsidiary testing resources as necessary to complete testing timely.
  • Prepare written and verbal presentations that educate and inform TMHCC management and personnel about internal controls and related processes.

Job Requirements

Position Knowledge, Skills, and Requirements: 


  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or the equivalent education and/or experience
  • CPA, CIA preferred 


  • Minimum of 8 years of relevant and progressive audit and/or Sarbanes-Oxley controls experience
  • Minimum of 5 years leadership experience
  • Insurance experience preferred
  • Experience with Governance, Risk and Compliance software and with automated audit workpaper tools considered a plus


  • Possess and have ability to apply broad knowledge of principles, practices, and procedures
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills with an emphasis on confidentiality, tact, and diplomacy
  • Superior organizational and analytical skills with demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously
  • Intellectual interest in monitoring and staying informed of changes and emerging risks in audit and controls and in the insurance industry, as well as regulatory changes and technical developments in order to proactively respond to a dynamic business environment
  • Advanced proficiency and experience using Microsoft Office tools
  • Overtime hours may be required to fulfill job responsibilities
  • May require travel up to 30% outside normal work location, including International travel
