Job Description

Tokio Marine HCC - Surety Group, a member of the Tokio Marine HCC group of companies has an exciting opportunity for a Renewals Underwriting Assistant I at our Los Angeles, CA location. Under supervision, the Renewals Underwriting Assistant I performs a variety of tasks associated with the processing and renewing of surety bonds. This position will report to the Commercial Bond Underwriting Manager in our Los Angeles office.

Position Summary:

Under immediate supervision, performs a variety of primarily routine tasks associated with the maintenance of renewal departmental bond records.

Key Responsibilities:

Relying on standardized instructions and pre-established guidelines, the Renewals Underwriting Assistant I is responsible for accomplishing the following as guided by others. These assignments are varied in nature and frequently routine.  

  • Answer phone and resolve basic inquiries or forward call to appropriate contact for resolution.
  • Assist with receptionist duties where needed.
  • Assist with general mail room duties where needed.
  • Process cancellations and reinstatements including those from branches, agents, principals and other departments (i.e. claims).
  • Process and mail renewal invoices, continuation certificates, cancellations, reinstatements, missed renewals, and other required mailing assignments.
  • Perform other general clerical duties such as copying, filing, faxing, scanning, and operating departmental office equipment.
  • Scan and attach all required documents to the system for accurate record keeping. This also includes updating bond files as needed.
  • Renew bonds for payment received.
  • Resolve renewal payment issues (i.e. NSF, premium mismatch)
  • Research bonds for possible premium refunds and where appropriate submit check requests.
  • Agency Statements reconciliation
  • Other duties as assigned (i.e. special projects).


Job Requirements

Position Knowledge, Skills, and Requirements:


  • High school diploma or equivalent


  • Up to two years of relevant administrative support experience


  • Possess and have ability to apply basic knowledge of principles, practices, and procedures
  • Good written and verbal communication skills with an emphasis on confidentiality, tact, and diplomacy
  • Good organizational and analytical skills; demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously
  • Intermediate proficiency and experience using Microsoft Office Package (Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Word)

Working Conditions and Physical Demands:

  • Overtime hours may be required to fulfill job responsibilities
  • May require travel outside normal work location
  • May require a valid driver’s license
  • May be required to stoop, bend, or sit for extended periods of time
  • May be required to lift up to 10 pounds
  • Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard, mouse, and other devices
  • Close vision and ability to adjust focus; required to read a computer screen
