Job Description

The Stop Loss Group, a member of Tokio Marine HCC, offers an extensive product portfolio including medical stop loss, group term life and long and short-term disability insurance. We provide the self-insured industry with innovative solutions to protect self-funded employers from potentially catastrophic losses.

Position Summary:

Under general supervision, make underwriting recommendations and decisions to protect the financial assets of the company and the carrier. Reviews proposal requests to evaluate, classify, and rate each risk to determine acceptability, coverage, and pricing. Establishes, maintains, and develops producer relationships. This position has expanded underwriting authority and business development responsibility. These assignments are broad in nature and work can be difficult.

Key Responsibilities:

Relying on experience and judgment, the Senior Underwriter is responsible for accomplishing the following assignments. These assignments are broad in nature and work can be difficult.

• Evaluates risk acceptability within established guidelines and set appropriate rates and factor levels
• Meet annual company goals for profitability, renewal retention, revenue growth, and new business production.
• Analyze proposed plan changes to acceptability and cost.
• Work in conjunction with the Marketing department to follow-up on quoted cases.
• May communicates with TPA/Broker’s to answer questions, explain decisions, deal with problems, build, and maintain productive relationships. Respond appropriately and in a timely manner to service requests.
• Complete RFP’s timely and follow-up for status and competitive numbers. Quote at least 66% of RFP’s received.

• Develop work plans, establish timelines, and set goals for assigned work.
• Meet commitments on deadlines.

• Review activities, results, and recommendations with management and clients as appropriate.
Cost Management
• Drive improvement in existing business processes.
• Perform work thoroughly in a cost efficient manner and at a high productivity level.

Business Controls and Policies
• Comply with all corporate policies and procedures.
• Report any breakdown in controls to management.
• Conduct all activities in a safe manner.

People Management
• No people management responsibility but may provide guidance to less experienced employees

Job Requirements

Position Knowledge, Skills, and Requirements:

• Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Accounting or Finance or a related field or the equivalent education and/or experience
• Prefer work towards CEBS, FMLI, or CLU certification

• Minimum of five years of relevant and progressive professional experience

• Possess and have ability to apply broad knowledge of principles, practices, and procedures
• Ability to read and interpret documents such as Plan of benefits, bid specifications, claim reports, and procedural manuals
• Excellent written and verbal communications skills with an emphasis on confidentiality, tact, and diplomacy
• Exceptional organizational and analytical skills; demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously
• Knowledgeable of industry changes, legal updates and technical developments related to applicable area of the Company’s business to proactively respond to changing business environment
• Intermediate proficiency and experience using Microsoft Office Package (Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Word)
