Job Description

Tokio Marine HCC – D&O Group, a member of the Tokio Marine HCC group of companies, has an exciting opportunity for an Underwriting Counsel in our office in Farmington, CT.

Key Responsibilities:

Relying on broad knowledge and strong leadership skills, the Underwriting Counsel is accountable for the following responsibilities:

Underwriting Support
• Develop and direct the drafting of endorsements to policies for the D&O Group.
• Develop and direct the drafting and revision of policy forms for the D&O Group.
• Coordinate and strategize with underwriting relative to the development and marketing of new products, including overseeing the drafting of new policy forms.
• Participate in meetings, seminars, and events for policyholders and/or brokers that provide information and education on relevant industry trends and topics.
• Coordinate and conduct in-house trainings and seminars for underwriting staff on industry trends, upcoming legislation changes, and other relevant topics.
• Provide underwriting with legal advice and counsel on business and risk management issues with respect to claim trends, policy language, emerging issues, etc.

Legal Compliance
• Respond to Insurance Department complaints, inquiries and objections to endorsements and/or policy forms and any other matter arising.
• Identify and coordinate legal initiatives and develop strategies to promote consistency and legal risk mitigation throughout the organization.
• Direct regulatory research and maintain awareness of current developments in Federal, State and tax laws that may impact the Company.
• Assure all programs operate in compliance with all applicable laws.
• Direct the implementation of legal holds to preserve information.
• Work with management across the Company to review issues and analyze various disclosure issues.
• Provide advice and leadership regarding sound records management practices.

Job Requirements

Position Knowledge, Skills, and Requirements:

• Doctor of Jurisprudence (J.D.) degree
• Excellent written and verbal communications skills with an emphasis on confidentiality, tact, and diplomacy
• Superior organizational and analytical skills; demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously
• Knowledgeable of industry changes, legal updates and technical developments related to applicable area of the Company’s business to proactively respond to changing business environment
Working Conditions and Physical Demands:
• Overtime hours may be required to fulfill job responsibilities
• May require travel outside normal work location
• May require a valid driver’s license
• May be required to stoop, bend, or sit for extended periods of time
• May be required to lift up to 10 pounds
• Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard, mouse, and other devices
• Close vision and ability to adjust focus; required to read a computer screen
